ʻApapane 5x7" Art Print

The ʻapapane is a crimson Hawaiian honeycreeper and pollinator of the ʻōhiʻa lehua. The red feathers of the ʻapapane were sometimes used to adorn the capes, helmets, and lei of aliʻi - the chiefs and monarchs of Hawai'i.

The entirety of the ʻōhiʻa plant was used in Native Hawaiian practices. The wood of the tree was used to make kapa beaters, poi boards, and weapons; the leaves were used as tea; and the flowers were used in lei-making and other cultural adornments.

Both the ʻapapane and ʻōhiʻa are endemic to the Hawaiian islands.
