This greeting card features a red and black illustration inspired by the endangered Kāhuli (Hawaiian land snails) and the Hawaiian ʻŌhiʻa lehua.

Kāhuli are endangered and some species are even extinct. This design was specifically inspired by Laminella sanguinea, which has a very striking pattern on its shell.

The red flowers in the design are ʻōhiʻa lehua, which I included because of their connection to kāhuli. The decreased kāhuli population and the spread of rapid ʻōhiʻa death caused by a fungal pathogen are unfortunately and explicitly linked. ʻŌhiʻa trees provide food and shelter for kāhuli and kāhuli protect the trees from fungal infection by eating the fungi. I wanted to represent both in this design.
