In Hawaiian, mana means divine power; to have authority; possessed of power. Wāhine means women. This illustration centers around women empowerment, autonomy, and power in general, especially in a world and time where women's rights are constantly challenged and diminished.
Two prominent Hawaiian monarchs are depicted - Queen Kaʻahumanu (left) and Queen Liliʻuokalani (right) - while also portraying a modern-day unnamed Hawaiian figure (center) who is meant to be someone that the viewer can identify with in this current day and age. A reminder that we come from a culture and society of powerful women, who were also challenged, who persevered. A reminder that we have the power of the past, present, and the future within us.
